privacy perspective: deploy https??

Postby kazi » Tue Jun 30, 2009 7:37 am

Since registration is open to all and each request from a unique email is automatically accepted, I think it is important for the forum to deploy https by default, if only for authentication.

Thanks Kazi for the first suggestion!

A new registrant has to validate his email address by checking for an email sent by the board. This is not automatic as it requires user input. This is done to slow spambots. The use of https for password authentication is a useful idea. But the costs involved in buying an ssl certificate for now wards us off the project. In the meantime however, we would suggest all members to use strong passwords. Read The Simplest Security: A Guide To Better Password Practices on some excellent tips.

The point about cost is valid. The only way to save ourselves from extra cost is to use self-signed certificates, and that should not cost anything financially, maybe some time and a little technical expertise. So cost should not be a major issue.
